First Gen Abroad is WSU’s study abroad program exclusively for students who are the first in their family to attend college. Our five-week summer programs are specifically designed to be affordable, relevant, and fun!
First Gen Abroad students not only experience academic, personal, and professional growth during their time in the program – they also have unique opportunities to encounter new cultures, explore new places, and meet new people. It’s a life-changing experience!
Who Can Participate
First Gen Abroad is open to undergraduate first-gen students from all academic majors, WSU campuses, and class standings. You must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to participate. You do not need to be fluent in your host country’s language.
Why First Gen Abroad?
The knowledge, confidence, and assurance you gain while abroad are invaluable to your life at WSU and beyond. Research shows that students who study abroad:
- Earn higher GPAs
- Have higher degree completion rates
- Increase their cultural understanding and open-mindedness
- Learn another language and gain experience with diverse populations
Students selected to participate in First Gen Abroad also gain access to a campus network of other first-generation students with similar backgrounds, interests, and goals. These opportunities not only help you achieve at WSU, but also help you stand out in today’s competitive job market!
