Being a first-gen student is a tremendous accomplishment, and you should be proud of everything you’ve achieved to get here. We know there’s more greatness in store for you at WSU, and we’re here to support you along the way. 

Defining "First-Gen"

A first-generation Coug is someone whose parents or legal guardians did not have or complete a four-year degree at a college or university in in the United States during their formative years.

1 in 3 WSU students are First Gen

In Fall 2024, this translates to 7,265 undergraduate students, 562 graduate students, and 231 professional students across all WSU campuses. 

This significant representation underscores WSU's commitment to supporting first-generation students and highlights the university's inclusive academic environment.​

Being a first-generation student can present unique challenges, such as navigating college systems without familial guidance. However, at WSU, first-generation students are not alone. The substantial community of peers and dedicated support services ensures that these students have the resources and networks necessary to thrive academically and personally.​


WSU is proud to be recognized as a FirstGen Forward Network Leader, a designation awarded by the national FirstGen Forward initiative. This honor reflects WSU's deep commitment to advancing the success of first-generation college students through evidence-based practices and institutional transformation. As a Network Leader, WSU joins a select group of institutions that serve as models for supporting first-generation students, sharing insights and strategies to foster inclusive academic environments. ​

Participation in the FirstGen Forward Network provides WSU with access to a collaborative community of over 400 institutions dedicated to first-generation student success. This engagement allows WSU to exchange best practices, participate in professional development opportunities, and contribute to a national dialogue on enhancing the first-generation student experience. For WSU students, this means benefiting from programs and initiatives informed by a broad network of expertise, ensuring they receive the support needed to thrive academically and personally. ​
